Astigmatic chrono-camera “Buratino”

“Buratino” is an experimental large-format direct-view digital camera I created as part of a project at the Astigmatism Research Institute. It combines Soviet optical-mechanical traditions with modern digital technologies, creating an instrument that captures not only images but also the passage of time itself.

The camera’s key feature is its 210×290mm chrono-matrix with a resolution of over 400 megapixels. While shooting, the sensor is in constant motion, allowing it to capture spatial-temporal shifts, displacements, and overlaps. Thus, each frame becomes not a photograph in the traditional sense, but a visualization of the dynamics of the environment: the drift of clouds, the pulsation of light, the interaction of architecture and nature.
