Peephole Museum

The world’s smallest private museum, covering 608 cm², once presented at the Hermitage through an “intervention”.

HR

We are pleased to present the third exhibition at the unique Peephole Gallery, which rightfully takes on the status of a museum for this project. The event explores intervention through seclusion: a world within a world, a museum within a museum. With this in mind, we held an open call inviting artists to create an art object that would become an important part of an exhibition occupying 608 square centimetres.

The dimensions of the proposed works mattered: unfortunately, the gallery’s walls still cannot stretch. Prospective participants were invited not only to create works of high artistic quality but also to leave room for other artists.

Our ambitious aim was to include work by as many contemporary artists as possible.

The third exhibition at Peephole, the world’s smallest gallery, is devoted to intervention through seclusion. A world within a world. A museum within a museum. The site of the intervention was the State Hermitage, the museum of fine and decorative arts in Saint Petersburg.

Hermitage: from the French ermitage—a secluded place, a cell, a hermit’s refuge, seclusion.

This gives us the exhibition’s shared theme: a place of seclusion, a cell, a hermit’s refuge, retreat. We have created a small, very small shelter for art: a hidden world inside, into which one can only peek through a peephole.
